Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP)
An advanced nurse practitioner or ANP is a registered nurse who's undertaken extensive additional training, giving them the knowledge and competencies needed for advanced clinical practice.
An ANP can see patients with diagnosed and undiagnosed conditions, decide on the treatment required, including referring patients to hospital (for specialist assessment) and ordering investigations. ANPs who have a prescribing qualification (NMP) are able to prescribe medicines and carry out medication reviews. Supervised and mentored by our GP team, our ANPs work as autonomous practitioners.
You may see an ANP for something which you have historically seen a GP about. This helps us to ensure that we have more GP appointments for patients who have complex needs or who need continuity of care with one particular clinician. Our ANPs work very closely with our GPs and should they need to discuss your plan of treatment, they can usually do so without the need for a further appointment.
Whilst ANPs cannot issue a Med 3 (Fit/Sick note), they can arrange for your Doctor to do this for you. An ANP appointment is suitable for all patients except pregnant ladies and those patients under the age of 2 years.
