Healthcare Assistants (HCA)
Healthcare assistants or HCAs are not registered healthcare professionals, but HCAs employed since 2015 are expected to complete the Care Certificate and will have qualified to a level 3 healthcare qualification. HCAs in training may be referred to as ‘Trainee HCA’.
HCAs can:
Collect blood samples
Measure and record blood pressure
Collect specimens such as urinalysis
Perform lung-function tests and peak-flow tests
Undertake new patient health checks including checking diabetic feet
Record ECGs
Provide health promotion advice such as smoking cessation
Support the nursing team with dressing changes and vaccinations
HCAs can advance their career to a Nurse Associate as a Trainee Nurse Associate Apprenticeship role

General Practitioner Assistants (GPA)
General Practitioner Assistants or GPAs are not registered healthcare professionals, but have achieved GPA specialist training at a foundation degree level.
Their role is to support the GPs both administratively and with simple clinical tasks as well as act as a point of contact between patient and doctor.
GPAs can:
Collect blood samples and measure and record blood pressure
Collect specimens such as urinalysis
Record ECGs
Provide health promotion advice such as smoking cessation
Take a patient history and relay this to the GP
Help patients to understand and comply with a plan of care which has been previously agreed by a GP
Act as point of contact between GP and patient to enhance patient care
Carry out administrative duties on behalf of the GP
Trainee Nurse Associate (TNA) and Return to Practice Nurses (RTP)
A nursing associate is a member of the practice nursing team who’s registered with the Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC). A Trainee NA is working towards this qualification in an Apprenticeship role, with full support from an external training provider and the Nursing team.
A return to Practice Nurse is a previously registered nurse who has let their NMC pin lapse. They are undertaking a return to practice nurse course and are working in placement at the Practice to regain their nursing skills.
A Trainee Nurse Associate and Return to Practice Nurse can:
Promote health and give information about preventing ill health
Carry out baseline observations – blood pressure, temperature and pulse
Collect clinical specimens including blood
Undertake ECGs
Support patients and their families following unwelcome diagnoses
Carry out a range of clinical tasks including some immunisations and dressings
