Minor Illness Nurse

A Minor Illness Nurse is a registered nurse who’s undertaken additional training, giving them the knowledge and competencies needed to enhance their skills in clinical triage. 


 Using the Doctorlink summary of assessed needs as a starting point the Minor Illness Nurse will:


Manage on-the-day demand for patient care

Undertake face-to-face and telephone triage 

Manage patients with common illnesses or minor injuries

Advise patients on healthcare matters including the self-management of conditions

Carry out health checks and reviews

Perform and read ECGs

Liaise with the GP or Senior Clinicians to agree a treatment plan or referral pathway


Practice Nurse, Prescribing Nurse (NMP) and Long Term Condition Nurse

A practice nurse (PN) is a registered nurse who’s carried out additional training to enable them to provide a range of services, including:


Wound management

Travel advice & vaccinations

Childhood immunisations

Family planning including cervical screening

Men’s health

Sexual health

Smoking cessation

Management of long-term conditions

Blood sample collection and ECGs

Nurses who have speciality training in long term conditions may also be a precribing nurse or non-medical prescriber (NMP).  These nurses can also prescribe and review medication within their scope of practice.

Nursing Associate, Registered Nursing Degree Apprentice and Student Nurses

A Nursing Associate is a member of the practice nursing team who’s registered with the Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC).  


They can:


Promote health and give information about preventing ill health

Carry out baseline observations – blood pressure, temperature and pulse

Collect clinical specimens including blood

Undertake ECGs

Support patients and their families following unwelcome diagnoses

Carry out a range of clinical tasks including some immunisations and cervical screening


NAs can advance their career to Practice Nurse as a Registered Nursing Degree Apprenticeship role.  This is supported by an appropriate university and the wider Practice Team.


Patford House Partnership also support placements for Trainee Nurse Associates, Registered Nursing Degree Apprentices and Student Nurses from local service providers and universities.  We feel a sense of duty in supporting the development for our future nursing workforce for the benefit of the whole of the NHS and our patients.
